Stephanus is a Content Manager at Lumico, responsible for the management of clients’ social media as well as creating written material. He has a Master’s Degree in Ancient Cultures from the University of Stellenbosch and is working on his doctorate in the same field.
An enthusiastic reader, he also enjoys creative writing when he has free time. His academic text on ancient Persia has been featured in a journal and gathering knowledge is an important part of his daily life and existence. Music and musical theatre usually help him relax after a hard day at the office.
Mizan van der Merwe is a Content Editor at Lumico based in Vredendal, and is creating content for social media accounts and managing MyMatzikama.com.
She studied BA Communication, English and Afrikaans in Potchefstroom and completed her honours in Journalism at Stellenbosch University. After working at a retail marketing company in Stellenbosch she embarked on a new adventure to the Matzikama district.
She is originally from Nelspruit and enjoys exploring new places, spending time with friends, making lame jokes and browsing social media with a glass of wine in hand.
Francky graduated from the Cape Peninsula University Of Cape Town (CPUT), where he studied Multimedia Technology (Informatics and Design). He holds an ND in Multimedia Technology.
Francky hails from the Democratic Republic Of Congo where he studied IT, and loves new technology, making him the perfect fit for the Lumico team.
When he’s not hard at work creating beautiful work for our clients, he’s throwing “the odd event” and indulging in relaxed weekends where he philosophises about life.
He’s also been known to make a mean toasted ham and cheese.
Austin le Roux is a project coordinator at Lumico.
In a prior capacity, he was a member of the Johannesburg Student Council from 2014 – 2015. Whilst on the Council, he was part of the mayoral committee whose task it was to oversee operations, and he has now brought these organisational skills to Lumico.
Austin is also an alumni of the South African Institute of International Affairs’ Youth Policy committee. Here, he dealt with organisations and institutions who voiced their opinions about global issues – Austin’s most passionate topic being small business development.
Besides engaging in politics and international law, Austin enjoys playing indoor football and would never turn down a game of pool.
Unathi is a passionate web developer whose nickname is Fuzz.
He’s possibly the biggest Ed Sheeran fan on the face of the planet and cites his only regret in life is his inability to grow a beard.
When he’s not carving out a digital presence for Lumico’s clients, he’s hanging around with his friends and enjoying a spot of McDonald’s, “because it tastes good.”
With a happy, free spirited demeanour, Unathi is a great addition to the Lumico team.
Awelani is a creative graphic designer who likes creating visuals, illustrations and experimenting with typography designs on both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. He is also an aspiring photographer and videographer and is part of the Lumico division that creates visually enticing content for our clients.
In his spare time he enjoys playing hip hop music, attending social events, and designing his own street apparel brand.
Deon was born and raised in Alexander Bay and finished school in Vredendal. He has a massive love for guitars and has been playing for 8 years. In fact, he is still rockin’ it. Deon completed a Web Developer course and from here started getting more interested in computer technology. He is responsible for web maintenance and content loading in our Vredendal office.
Tristan is passionate about traveling and exploring the world. “I am alway positive and enthusiastic about everything I do.”
Hein Boshoff is a Content Manager in the Lumico team. He is a multi-skilled writer, designer, and photographer and responsible for the strategy and management of multiple clients’ social media accounts. Hein is a Instagram guru and also specializes in social media networking with a particular emphasis on the youth market.
After growing up in the Klein Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, Hein moved to Cape Town to follow his dream of studying a BA degree in Visual Arts and Communication at Prestige Academy. Currently in his final year of studies, Hein brings fresh and creative ideas to the Lumico team.
Annemarie is part of the content team at Lumico creating social media posts, original website content and marketing campaigns. As an avid social media user she believes in the power of mobile media – the future is digital.
Three years at Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies has equipped Annemarie with experience playing various roles. This includes everything from planning content pieces and photographing on site, to writing the story, formulating it for print, web and social media as well as assessing the performance using the available tools. She has an excellent understanding of and passion for changing social constructs, current events and trends.
Curious by nature, Annemarie loves travel, food and photography. Paired with organisation skills, a keen eye for detail and a flair for writing, Annemarie is well suited to sharing the stories of the people she meets and the places she sees.
Heidi van der Merwe is content manager at Lumico. She has extensive experience in the media industry, having worked as a journalist, sub-editor and promotions editor at Die Burger newspaper for 15 years, as well as You/Huisgenoot/Drum.
Heidi was also part of the content management team for South Africa’s first content app, MyEdit. She is in charge of sub-editing and the proofreading of copy at Limico.
Heidi also has many years of experience in catering, having worked for catering companies supplying food for airlines as well as big events like the J&B Met. Heidi is originally from Paarl, where she matriculated at Paarl Gymnasium.
Philip is the financial administrator at Lumico and makes sure we keep our books in good order. Reporting to our financial director, Philip manages the accounts receivable and payable and also supports the smooth running of our administration and operations.
Philip is originally from Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal. He moved to Cape Town and completed his B. Com Bus Management at Prestige Academy.
He is an avid mountain hiker, surfer and general lover of the outdoors.
As a junior graphic design at Lumico, Ronald creates visual content of a high standard for various clients’ social media campaigns, which requires him to work closely with the content team. He holds a N6 Certificate in Art and Design from the College of Cape Town.
He is a lover of art, autobiographies and music and spends his weekends helping to organize Hip Hop events. Also an avid photographer, he regularly goes on nature hikes with his camera in hand to embrace this passion.
Ronald enjoys occasionally speaking in various accents and has worked in construction and designed printed T-shirts.
Sune was born in Pretoria but moved to the West Coast when she was young and matriculated at Hopefield High School. Before joining the Lumico team in Vredendal where she handles all administration, she worked at the Letstatsi Lodge in Vanrhynsdorp. She wants to study an administration and business management course through UNISA. Sune enjoys going to drag races, spending time with friends, camping and being artistic. ‘’I always believe that where one door closes, another opens. My motto in life is ‘never let the fear of striking out, keep you from playing the game’.
Kelvin is Manager of Client Liaison at Lumico’s Vredendal Office. He is responsible for client interaction and also for the operational management in the region. Kelvin grew up on a Karoo farm and earned his three-year NVC Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism in 2011 and immediately embarked upon a career in the client service industry. After working at a call center group in Johannesburg, Kelvin joined Lumico in Vredendal.
His hobbies include the outdoors: camping and hunting. He also does freelance modeling and is a people’s person. His motivations in life are never to forget your roots, and the belief that one’s dreams should be bigger than one’s fears.
Stavios is a Junior web Developer at Lumico and is responsible for creating modern, unique websites for clients. He completed a government-sponsored course in Java programming through Oracle University and is a certified Oracle Junior Associate. He has previous working experience in software.
A curious mind and a passion for tackling problems with a fresh approach has made Stavios an asset to the Development Team. A self-proclaimed tech-enthusiast and extreme sports lover, Stavios enjoys doing parkour (free running). He plans to continue studying Software Development at the University of Cape Town.
Johan was born in Paarl, but moved all across South Africa and eventually graduated at Vredendal High School. He previously worked on a farm in New Mexico in the United States and was a marketer for a media house before joining the Lumico team. He enjoys playing cricket and working out at the gym in his spare time.
His motto in life is, ‘dreams don’t work unless you do.’
As a Content Coordinator in our Vredendal office, Helgaard is responsible for the management of content flow, scheduling of different content genres for our agricultural clients.
Helgaard grew up in Vredendal and graduated from Vredendal High School. He is a self-taught computer wizard. In his spare time, Helgaard is an avid online computer gamer.
Dean graduated at the NWU – Potchefstroom Campus with a BCom degree and at the NWU Potchefstroom Business School with a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management. Developing his skills in communication, leadership, time management and sealing deals with clients in practice and at the university, he was able to work with companies of high caliber and great talent of South Africa. Being an avid mountain climber and fitness junkie, he makes it his day’s mission to be as healthy as possible as he believes that a healthy environment brings happiness and peace. Dean has also done interviews and written articles of the youngest entertainment celebrities in South Africa
As Project and Business Solutions Manager at Lumico, it is his responsibility to make sure that his team work in the most fluent pattern possible to ensure client strategy is achieved and also maintaining great relationships with all our clients.
Eric is a Junior Web Developer in the Lumico team. He is responsible for creating and maintaining clients’ websites. A self-taught web programmer and graphic designer, his focus is on front-end development, ensuring that our clients’ websites navigate easily and look presentable.
Eric is currently a student at UNISA, where he is in his second year of studying for a National Diploma in Information and Communication Technology. Eric’s work is his passion, leading to him spending the bulk of his time learning more about programming languages and familiarising himself with coding. He also enjoys doing graphic illustration.
Born and raised in Cape Town, Stephen is a Photographer and Videographer at Lumico. He is responsible for creating graphic content of the highest caliber for clients’ social media platforms, websites and marketing campaigns.
Stephen started taking pictures when he was only seven years old and received his first DSLR camera as a gift in 2009. He earned a Diploma in Professional Photography at the Photography Institute in 2016 and is currently studying an advanced six months course in Portrait Photography. He is spurred on by the amount of freedom that photography offers him.
Stephen travels to Thailand once a year to visit family and has played the piano since he was eight years old. He started playing computer games at age 4 and used to play professionally for premiere division teams. He can solve a rubik’s cube in just over a minute and claims to have solved it the first time at age seven.
As a Head of Platform Content, Lawrence creates content for the first phases of new clients’ digital ecosystems . He creates the content with the clients and also manages various projects related to website creation, working closely with the Development team. His dynamic and engaging way of operating and passion for working with people allows him to effectively execute projects.
Lawrence is studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of South Africa, and
has a great passion for reading and writing. His hobbies include visual art and playing drums.
Robert is a Content Manager for Lumico, using his creativity to engage with clients’ needs in unique ways and supplying different outlets with competitive thinking and, consequently, distinctly unique content. He is responsible for content posted on social media, websites, and a multitude of other outlets.
Creativity makes up a great part of Robert’s life, which allows him to be a very out-of-the-box thinker when it comes to his position as Content Manager. He is a seasoned musician, playing guitar and singing solo shows throughout Cape Town when he is not writing for Lumico.
As a Web Developer, Delight assists the Development Team in creating websites and monitoring their functionality to ensure they run efficiently and fluently. She partakes in the back-end development of websites, and also the front-end, lending a hand to the visual aspects and captivating visitors on the websites.
Delight got her Honours Degree in Information Technology from Chinhoyi University of Technology in 2015, and moved to South Africa shortly after.
Delight has a passion for reading and learning, which allows her to keep a fine eye on our various websites’ details and to stay up to date with current developments in the digital sphere.
Lourens is part of the Design Team, working in tandem with other designers in the creation of all multimedia to be used in the publication of social media posts, original website content and marketing campaigns. His designs can also be seen on the plethora of websites that he has helped to enrich.
His talent as a designer was quickly noticed after completing his qualification in Graphics Design and Photography at CTU in Stellenbosch. His passion for music and film is notable in his design work, reflecting an abundance in creativity.
He is also a musician with a love for the guitar.
David Engelbrecht is a former Media24 alumni with more than six years experience in various fields of media. Starting off in the trenches as a journalist, he has worked himself up through various platforms and roles: community paper photojournalist, content producer for Channel24, senior corporate content journalist for Die Burger’s corporate content division, layout artist and editor for various travel and lifestyle supplements. He now joins the Lumico team as the head of corporate content with a great passion for helping clients expand their digital presence and offer them digital solutions to their content.
David will head the division alongside a team of talented project managers and content writers who will help carry this goal out.

As a Content Manager specializing mostly in the digital market, Stephen has various focus points in the company – he is a Copywriter, Content Creator and Social Media Manager. Furthermore, he has the responsibility of creating liaisons with clients and determine the best way to make the content fit their needs. He also has experience as a photographer and often contributes to submitting high-quality photographs to the design team.
Stephen received his qualification for BComm Marketing Management in 2011 from North West University, Potchefstroom, before continuing to receive his BComm Honours in Marketing and Entrepreneurship in 2012. After finishing his studies he decided to make the move to digital media, resulting in his close involvement with mostly digital clients at Lumico.
Stephen’s experience history involves a great deal of freelancing, such as travel writing for various outlets and even travelling to Korea to serve as an English teacher. His passion for writing and street photography is apparent in his work, and can be seen in the Nifty Shutter website, of which he is the co-founder, as well as his personal photography blog, Fever Frames Photography.
As Content Coordinator, Dean is responsible for the management of content flow, scheduling of different content genres and the support of the content team on various platforms. He is also regularly involved in the management of real-life live campaigns for Lumico’s clients.
After graduating as top management student at Boston College in Paarl, he joined the Lumico team. In his spare time, he writes and records his own songs and enjoys playing action cricket.
Noluviwe is one of the original members of the Lumico team. She is responsible for a wide variety of office administration and duties. Sylvia has been with us from the very beginning and has seen many changes take place during her time at Lumico. She is often referred to as the “spirit of Lumico,” and her enthusiasm is contagious.
Johan C Venter is a project manager at Lumico working on entertainment clients. Johan has more than 10 years’ experience in the media, marketing, and entertainment sphere. Johan is also a seasoned performing artist with several albums.
He worked as COO for an independent record label before joining the Lumico team. Here he channels his talent for project management on more established clients, a role that makes use of his creative vision too. Johan has especially focused on people-relations and always strive to get the best results.
Johan is based in our Pretoria office.
Gustave is a Website Developer in the Lumico team. He focuses on functionality to ensure user-friendliness on all applicable platforms in the digital ecosystem.
Hailing from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he left the business world to study Computer Systems at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, leading him on the path to Lumico.
Akhona is a Web Developer in the Lumico team. She monitors and maintains our clients’ digital ecosystems. Her focus is on front-end development, ensuring that our clients’ digital ecosystems navigate easily and look presentable.
Akhona graduated from Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape, where she studied Communication Networks.
Linah is responsible for various office administration and duties in our Cape Town office. She is assisting the team with administration and logistical support to ensure efficient production. With a friendly attitude, she also makes sure that our clients are being taken care of when they visit the office.
As Head of Operations, Keenan is leading the Lumico content creators. His main goal is to ensure that clients’ deadlines and targets are met, and to consolidate communication between the different groups to ensure optimum efficiency.
His history in events has taught him to manage time efficiently, in the physical world as well as the digital. Keenan studied Sports Management through Cape Peninsula University of Technology and graduated with a B-Tech in 2016. As a Muay Thai trainer, Keenan incorporates his leadership experience into his teams and ensures that content is alway high-quality. He is also an aspiring Jedi.
Nzam is our Head of Platform Development, with the responsibility of overseeing all projects in the developmental phase. He leads the members in the Platform Development Team and works closely with some of our biggest clients while keeping the communication routes with project managers open and functional.
After working as a freelancer, Nzam settled down at Lumico as a developer at the end of 2015. He is a certified Microsoft Technology Associate and is always prepared to assist with any matters relating to Platform Development. Nzam is also a poet, which gives him a creative edge and ensures unique, innovative work.
Fanie Nel recently matriculated from school in 2014 and was immediately taken in by Lumico to further his passion for Afrikaans content creation and engagement. In his final year of school, Fanie’s appetite for Afrikaans music led him to start his own social media brand, Afrikaanse Musiek Nuus. Here he shares and talks about all things related to the Afrikaans music industry.
After being noticed – rather serendipitously – by Willem, he joined the Lumico team and is now helping us by writing content for the Afrikaans music sites and profiles that we manage.
Lindile, as Campaign Manager, is responsible for assisting in the running of marketing campaigns for some of our leading clients, and cooperates closely with the Public Relations team to ensure fluid proceedings. He also undertakes SEO for various forms of content to be certain that our clients are easily reachable in the online world.
Lindile studied Business Computing at Achievers Business College and then Human Resources Management at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He is currently running a successful Facebook page that keeps readers up to date with soccer news, and this gives him the necessary experience to deliver promising work to clients.
Liezel is the founder and editor of the lifestyle website, 9lives.co.za. This website won the award for the best beauty blog of South Africa. Together with a team of writers, Liezel covers nine categories: fashion, beauty, design and decor, tech, health, events, food, fun and celebrity news.
Combining aggregated and original content, 9Lives is all about providing readers with stimulating and entertaining information that will benefit their lifestyles. Liezel has worked for some of South Africa’s biggest magazine titles, including Huisgenoot and You, gaining experience in content creation, editorial processes, and management.
After graduating with an Industrial Design degree (where he held subjects like graphic design, art history and photography dear) Daniel moved into the creative sphere and has spent the last fifteen years in the industry. He has held varied positions and worked in different fields, including print and web, architecture and even car design.
Though a natural introvert, Daniel thrives off the company of like-minded people and finds inspiration in the inherent beauty of things, their provenance and authenticity.
Daniel is currently lending his expertise to the Lumico design department, where he works closely with Amy on important projects.
Elene was born and raised in Bloemfontein. She finished matric in 2009 and went on to study B.Tech (Clinical Technology) for a year, until finding her passion for languages in 2011 and doing a B.A. in language studies with Afrikaans/Dutch, English and French as majors, at the UFS. Elene specialised in Afrikaans/ Dutch literature during her honours studies, investigating the possibility of a dual language subtitling system in South African cinemas.
Elene is currently busy with her M.A. in film studies, researching the language of violence in films at UCT. Before working at Lumico, I worked on publishing projects at the UFS coordinating two different publications authored by various Afrikaans and Dutch Academics. As is evident from Elene’s studies her love of Afrikaans literature, language and art in all its forms: films, novels, comic books, philosophy and criticism are what she is deeply passionate about!
At Lumico Elene manages the content team, together with Edward Love, but focuses on heading up the Afrikaans side of things. She oversees the creation of content, does quality control and manages the content writers.
As Business Development Manager, Hendrik is responsible for sourcing relevant content for our clients’ online presences under the care of Lumico, and breathe life into them. Negotiating and cooperating with clients – mainly Afrikaans entertainers – makes up a great part of his work.
Hendrik’s personal experience as a recorded artist in the music industry allows him to communicate efficiently with our clients, many of whom are artists. He enjoys performing live himself, writing his own songs; he even released his own music video on Jukebox – KykNet.
Courtney Nicholas is thriving in the arena of Brand Account Management. Her positive energy and sunny demeanour make her ideal for the role, and she’s responsible for maintaining favourable relations with some of Lumico’s biggest clients. She prides herself on delivering diligent work and devotes time to making sure the high standards of Lumico are always being met. Courtney previously worked with Media24 Magazines Digital division as a Digital Channel Manager where she gained tremendous experience in the digital ecosystem.
Her role at Lumico is to manage the operations and also get involved in jump-starting new projects with planning events or marketing.

Daniël Malherbe is a co-founder and director of Lumico. He and Willem Breytenbach head up this innovative, results-driven digital agency.
Prior to founding his own company, Daniël was the Head of Business Innovation at Media24 Magazines Digital where he oversaw the MyEdit aggregation app as Project Owner. Here he had to update the Naspers board on the project and was responsible for driving the content, sales and business teams, ensuring a high level of excellence and timeous delivery.
Previously he worked in the Magazine Markets division, where he was entrusted with the responsibility of managing a relationship with Media24’s key distribution partners. He was also the Head of Digital for the Weekly Magazines division and managed the digital ecosystem of some of South Africa’s leading magazines, like Huisgenoot, You and Drum.
In addition, Daniël has done work for leading international consulting firms, where he has lent his strategic insights and helped pen white-papers. Prior to joining Media24, Daniël wrote for the Cape Times on a freelance basis. In more recent times, Daniël has achieved his master’s in Political Science from the University of Stellenbosch. The paper explores how social media was used in the 2014 South African National Election.
His grasp of business strategy and his dedication to excellence has served him well as co-founder and director of a new company. He relishes the opportunity to explore the digital environment and is proud of overseeing a company committed to breaking ground in a competitive industry.
Willem Breytenbach is the co-founder and director of Lumico. Lumico is a digital content agency that improves brand communication, creates digital strategies and manages projects from top to bottom. Lumico focuses on building communities, online and off, and thrives on creating engagement with brands. Based in Cape Town and Johannesburg, Lumico works with brands and clients across Africa, in New York, Munich, Perth, Hong Kong and more.
Before starting his own company, Willem headed up the digital division of Media24 Magazines, a Naspers company, and the leading magazine publisher in Africa. He was responsible for digital innovation, circulation, subscriptions and advertising revenue streams within this division. Willem and his team redefined the boundaries of business modelling for cross-platform media through their innovative digital content solutions. His team worked with publishers and media consultants across the United States, Netherlands and Turkey.
Breytenbach has also headed up the Media24 Weekly Magazines division in Southern Africa which published products for South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Angola. Managing these brands meant that Willem attended multiple international magazine events and conferences, such as FIPP, DLD and the Digital Innovation Summit.
Prior to working in magazines, Willem spent three years in New Delhi where he was heading up business development for the Naspers Group in India and the region. He was tasked with mapping the Indian media market, which included television, newspapers, magazines, Internet and mobile-TV verticals. Willem established Naspers’ first office in India and played a role in setting up Ibibo. Ibibo is an e-commerce and social media joint venture between Naspers and Tencent, the Chinese Internet company. During this time he was also involved in the rollout of Naspers’ print and other media ventures in China, Russia, Brazil and Greece.
Willem started his career as a newspaper journalist before becoming the Business Editor and later the News Editor of Die Burger newspaper. This was followed by his appointment as Marketing Director for the Newspaper group of Media24.
Willem has also served as the Chairman of the South African Magazine Publishers Association (MPASA) as well a board member of both the Print and Digital Media South Africa (PDMSA) and the Audit Bureau of Circulations of South Africa (ABC). In 2009 Willem was awarded the prestigious South African Publisher of the Year Award and as a journalist, he was twice awarded the South African Educational News Reporter of the Year Award.
